Established in 2003 in Cape Town, South Africa, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a PanAfrican network of centres of excellence offering postgraduate training, research, and public engagement for the advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Africa. Building on the success of its first Centre in South Africa, AIMS launched the Next Einstein Initiative (NEI) in 2008 to scale up and roll out the AIMS model across the continent. Five additional centres were established in Senegal (2011), Ghana (2012), Cameroon (2013), Tanzania (2014), and Rwanda (2016). Its global secretariat is situated in Kigali, Rwanda and it has global offices in United Kingdom, Germany and Canada. Research Officer, Next Einstein Forum (NEF)!
The next Einstein Forum is a platform that connects science, society and policy in Africa and the rest of the world with the goal to leverage science for human development globally. The NEF believes that Africa’s contributions to the global scientific community are critical for global progress. At the center of our efforts at NEF, is Africa’s young people, the driving force for Africa’s scientific renaissance. Reporting to the Policy, Innovation & Community of Scientists Manager, the research officer will be responsible for developing content for the panels at the NEF Global Gathering 2020 and other white papers or opinion papers that will support NEF in achieving its goal. Reporting to the Policy Innovation & Community of Scientists Manager, you will support research for content materials to organize the NEF Ministerial meetings, support the policy team on ongoing research and policy initiatives, you will be a resource person for all research work to panelists and a resource person to produce facts and figures to be used by the social media team, on the NEF blogs and other NEF platform. As the ideal candidate, you will support the logistical aspects to coordinating panelists and moderators for the NEF GG 2020, collect, analyze, evaluate and interpret information/findings to develop conceptual notes for the NEF Global Gathering 2020 panels, ensure a high standard of quality; efficient use of time; and achievement of project milestones within prescribed timelines, providing support to other NEF ongoing activities. This is a 10-month opportunity based at the AIMS Secretariat located in Kigali, Rwanda.
Do you have what we need?
Bachelors’ degree in any scientific field or political science Master’s degree is a plus;
Previous working experience with policy development and content development for large events or organizations;
Excellent writing skills;
Ability to work independently and take initiative as required;
Ability to effectively manage multiple and often conflicting priorities;
Self-sufficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publishing), Design applications and savvy with web-based applications (Dropbox, Google, Skype and SharePoint);
Available to respond to situations that may arise outside of normal work hours;
Ability and willingness to travel within and outside Africa whenever required;
Strong verbal and written English communication skills, good knowledge of French is an asset.
