Big Data For Development

Overview

AIMS in partnership with the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is implementing a Big Data project ‘Harnessing Big Data to meet the Sustainable Development Goals – Building Capacity in the Global South’.

As one of the key pillars of this project, AIMS wishes to work with partners to set up and run the Big Data for Development (BD4D) Innovation Challenge.

Project Background

This is the first Pan-African innovation hub that leverages the strength of the AIMS educational ecosystem across the continent. It is providing young African data enthusiasts with the opportunity to use big data techniques and access to big datasets to tackle African challenges by providing innovative solutions.

In a bid to build human capital and big data infrastructure, the hub’s main objectives will be to:

  • Increase the number of big data scientists on the continent through training and partnerships
  • Catalyze research on big data in Africa to address policy, infrastructure, funding and human capital gaps
  • Provide a platform for practitioners to network, learn and coordinate activities, through capacity building, supporting policy and innovation and ongoing research initiatives
