The fellowship program comprises of the following two components:
Work-Integrated Learning Research Opportunity: Candidates will be nominated by AIMS evaluating academic performance, technical qualification and personal suitability. Selected through a competitive application process, promising AIMS alumni will be offered a fully funded 6-month research fellowship with a group affiliated with the Cluster of Excellence at the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, Germany. Candidates have to show Machine Learning skills through coursework or their choice of thesis topic. Each fellowship will be co-supervised by an AIMS faculty member.
Doctoral Studies Opportunity: Towards the end of the research project (month 5), the supervisors evaluate the fellowship. Highly successful applicants may apply to upgrade the position into a PhD position for three years, for which it is expected that the PhD candidate spends roughly the same amount of time in Tübingen and the AIMS center of the African supervisor. This will be possible in only a few cases and will interface with the AIMS Data Science PhD program.
