Academics & Initiatives

AIMS’ mission is to enable Africa’s brightest students to flourish as independent thinkers, problem solvers and innovators capable of propelling Africa’s future scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency. We accomplish this by providing advanced, broadly applicable mathematical skills to talented students recruited from all over Africa. Our programs focus on:

Training: AIMS offers a Master’s program in five centers- South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania.

Research: AIMS provides practical research opportunities to advance development priorities.

Public Engagement: AIMS spreads the word about the potential of mathematical sciences to build a better future.

Other Programs

Teacher Training: AIMS South Africa offers professional development courses for teachers through the AIMS School Enrichment Centre. Find out more.

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at AIMS: In partnership with the MasterCard Foundation, AIMS offers a scholarship program enabling strengthened capacity and the scaling up of existing initiatives in mathematical sciences training and STEM coordination at national and pan-African levels for the continent’s brightest students. The Scholars Program at AIMS includes:

  • A two-year Cooperative Master’s Program with 86 Scholars at AIMS Sénégal.
  • Secondary school teacher training in Cameroon, aimed at building and strengthening the pipeline for STEM at the secondary level, directed at both pre- and in-service teachers.

AIMS INITIATIVES

Our initiatives  seek to unlock and nurture scientific and technical talent across Africa.

The Next Einstein Initiative (NEI): NEI is a core program of AIMS and involves the establishment and operation of a network of fifteen centres of excellence across Africa by 2023. These centres will focus on increasing the pipeline of mathematical sciences university gradates across the continent. Our hope is that our graduates will follow academic careers, helping to build teaching and research capabilities in African universities, and that others will proceed to leadership roles in government, industry and enterprise.

AIMS-NEI has been endorsed by the African Union and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), renowned African leaders and distinguished international scientists, academic institutions in Africa, Europe and North America, charitable foundations, and corporate partners.

The Next Einstein Forum (NEF): The NEF is an AIMS initiative in partnership with Robert Bosch Stiftung. The NEF is focused on convening Africa’s innovators to highlight breakthrough discoveries and catalyze scientific collaboration for human development. Find out more.

The Industry Initiative: AIMS’ Industry Initiative is focused on building a strong innovation pipeline to fuel economic growth. We connect AIMS graduates with for-profit, non-profit and government institutions that lead development, for career, internship and entrepreneurial opportunities. Find out more.
