The AIMS Mobility Grants for Women in Climate Change Science seeks to increase the participation, and visibility of women in climate change science, by connecting them to researchers in the AIMS’s Network, researchers in countries hosting AIMS centres, and peers in their research domain. The program will contribute to the visiting research fellows program, specifically, the ‘research-in-groups’ and ‘research-in-pairs’ component which seeks to foster interactions between in-country and international researchers, postgraduate researchers and postdoctoral fellows.

Climate change continues to threaten humanity, biodiversity and development; with girls and women being an important vulnerability group. Their expertise in providing solutions to the infinite challenges that are caused by a rapidly changing climate remains untapped.  Through this mobility grant program, women in the climate change sciences will be provided financial support to interact with peers, share their research findings on different platforms, and become an integral part of the climate change discourse. It is part of a broader effort by AIMS-NEI to build the intellectual capital needed to better our understanding of the causes of climate change in Africa, to solve the myriad challenges to Africa’s development resulting from climate change, and to increase the visibility and potential uptake of research-based interventions.

This AIMS Mobility Grants Program for Women in Climate Change Science is made possible by a grant from the International Development Research Centre, Ottawa, Canada, www.idrc.ca, and financial support from the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada (GAC), www.international.gc.ca, under the Mathematical Sciences for Climate Change Resilience Program administered by the AIMS Global Secretariat.

Applications are invited from outstanding female scientists currently residing anywhere in the world, including recipients of grants, fellowships and other awards from AIMS. Because mathematics is important for establishing rigorous linkages between observations, their explanations, and the evidence needed to support impactful decision-making, preference will be given to applicants proposing projects that make substantive use of the mathematical sciences, be it for modelling climate change, quantifying its impacts, evaluating the cost-effectiveness of interventions, designing experiments, analyzing data, or other relevant activities.

Additional requirements for applicants who are not currently affiliated with AIMS:

  • a curriculum vitae;
  • a letter of motivation; and
  • an electronic copy of three significant representative publications in the climate change science.

Applicants who do not hold an affiliation with AIMS should also request three referees to email confidential letters of support to mobilitygrants@nexteinstein.org using the subject line: “MS4CR mobilitygrants application support letter – first and last name of candidate”. The letters should be received before the application evaluation date. Applications shall be considered complete if all the documents listed above, including support letters, are received by AIMS before the 15th of the month. Applications received after the 15th of any given month will be evaluated in the subsequent month.

Applicants are advised to carefully read the following documents which are available at the program website:

Grantees will be selected by a committee appointed by AIMS-NEI.

Evaluation procedure

Applications will initially be screened for relevance and then evaluated by an internal committee based on the following criteria:

  • Quality of applicant: academic qualifications; experience in climate change-related research or research uptake; impact and recognition of prior work (e.g. through awards).
  • Quality of proposed project: relevance to climate change modelling, practice and policy; strength of connection to the mathematical sciences; experience of applicant in research or project topic; quality of project design; feasibility; suitability of proposed project environment(s); available resources; involvement of an in-country collaborator; quality and realism of budget projections.
  • Potential impact.

Duration

  • This is a non-recurring grant tenable for a period of 2 – 4 weeks at a maximum cost to AIMS-NEI of USD 3 700 per Grantee. The exact grant amount approved for the Grantee’s project will be specified in the grant agreement letter.
  • In exceptional cases, the project timeline can be extended by an additional month at no additional cost to AIMS-NEI. Grantees are to submit a formal request for extension at most 2-weeks before their agreed project end date.
  • AIMS may decide to terminate a specific grant if the Oversight Committee deems the Grantee’s progress to be unsatisfactory.

Financial support

  • Allowable costs under this Grant includes:
    • travel to an AIMS centre where the project will be executed;
    • limited living support; and
    • participation in one scientific event in the host country.
  • The actual amount provided to each Grantee will depend on the budgets submitted when applying.
  • Apart from the flight ticket which will be purchased by AIMS, the outstanding grant amount will be paid to each Grantee through the host AIMS centre upon their arrival at the centre.
  • Grantees are responsible for complying with applicable tax laws.
  • Grantees and members of the Grantee’s group/team may be eligible to apply to AIMS for additional funding in the form of internships, and highly prestigious research fellowships for women in climate change science, small research grants in climate change science and AIMS Postgraduate and Postdoctoral Research Bursaries/Fellowships in climate change science.
  • At the discretion of the Selection and Oversight Committees, Grantees maybe expected to provide ‘match funding’ to cover some of their proposed project activities.
  • Non-allowable costs include:
  • overheads to the Grantee, home or host institution;
  • salary or salary supplement for the Grantee, project advisor or other project members;
  • bench fees;
  • office space;
  • vehicle hire – the most economical means of travel should be used at all times.
  • If the Grantee is unable to take up the grant by the agreed start date, then s/he shall inform AIMS mobilitygrants@nexteinstein.org as soon as possible but before the expected start date.
  • The Grantee is expected to submit a report at the end of their stay using the reporting template.
  • In the event of a change in the Grantee’s circumstances that makes him/her unable to continue to adhere to these Terms of Reference, s/he should immediately notify AIMS by email mobilitygrants@nexteinstein.org. Failure to do so will be considered a breach of these Terms and render the Grant void and subject to a termination. At the sole discretion of AIMS, the Grantee may be requested to repay funds already received.
  • All flight tickets approved within the Grantee’s budget will be purchased by AIMS. The Grantee is expected to provide timely information about such travels at least 4 weeks prior to the planned trip.
  • Grantees may include the costs of participating in scientific events in their project budget if such an event has been identified. Preference will be given to Grantees who will be delivering an oral presentation during such events.
  • The Grantee may be expected to ‘match’ any approved funds.
  • Grantees and members of the Grantee’s group/team may be eligible to apply to AIMS for additional funding in the form of internships, and highly prestigious research fellowships for women in climate change science, small research grants in climate change science and AIMS Postgraduate and Postdoctoral Research Bursaries/Fellowships in climate change science..
  • The Grantee releases AIMS-NEI and its supporters from all liability for any injury or other type of harm that the Grantee or her/his dependents may suffer while holding the Grant.
