The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), as a publicly funded, self-governing organization of the institutions of higher education in Germany, promotes international academic exchange as well as educational co-operation with developing countries through a variety of funding and scholarship programmes. The purpose of the programme is to provide opportunities to post-doctoral researchers to conduct co-operative research at AIMS South Africa, under the guidance of the research chair holder. The programme is designed to support post-doctoral training. There is also a teaching responsibility (English) – in agreement with the chair holder. DAAD is offering one fellowship in 2017

Who can apply?
Applicants have to :

– Have completed their PhD degree preferably less than three years ago.

– Be current or prospective teaching or research staff at an international university or research institution.

– Be preferably nationals of an African country.

Eligible Fields
Data Science
Data Science in a very broad sense. We are looking for a candidate with experience including, but not limited to, one or more of the
following areas:
1. Numerical Optimization / Numerical Linear Algebra
2. Approximation Theory / Functional Analysis
3. High-dimensional (Computational) Statistics
4. Bayesian Statistics and Probability
5. Signal Processing / Applied Harmonic Analysis
6. Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence
7. Parallel Computing and Programming
8. Graph Theory and Complex Networks
The fellowship is tenable at AIMS South Africa.
What can be funded?
The objective for fellows is to undertake research during the tenure of the award. The project should not be a reworking or mere extension of the candidate’s doctoral research project.
In addition: the selected candidate is expected to have a team spirit, participate in the scientific activities and animations at AIMS South Africa.
Duration of the funding
The awards are tenable for a period of two years

Value
The fellowship consists of:

– a travel allowance to participate in international conferences: 2000 EUR

– a monthly instalment: 1000 EUR

– a personal lump sum of 100 Euro/month (for work-visa etc)

AIMS South Africa will provide the fellow with a work laptop. Some salary adjustment is possible to negotiate with AIMS South Africa. The incumbent is obliged to conclude an insurance policy (health/accident/personal liability).

What requirements must be met?
Applicants have to :

At the end of the fellowship the fellow has to provide a detailed report on the findings of the research signed by the hosting professor at AIMS South Africa.

Documents to be submitted

– DAAD application form duly filled (available in the DAAD-Portal).

– Curriculum Vitae (please use the europass specimen form at |http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu
[%7Chttp://europass.cedefop.europa.eu]), including list of publications (if applicable).

– Research proposal (maximum 5 pages) including detailed time and work plan, which must have been arranged in advance with the chair holder.

– 2 recommendation letters by academic referees.

– PhD certificate (certified as true copy of the original certificate).

– Master’s certificate (certified as true copy of the original certificate).
