THE AGRICULTURAL CLIMATE RESILIENCE ENHANCEMENT INITIATIVE PROJECT (ACREI)
Host Institution: IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Centre (ICPAC)
Location: Ngong Town Kibiku A Road, P.O. Box 10304-00100, Nairobi, Kenya; T +254 0203514426
Supervisors: Linda Ogallo, Climate Change Adaptation Expert ICPAC; PhD Climate change Adaptation, M.Sc. Chemistry, B.Sc. Chemistry
Project Description: The objective of the Agricultural Climate Resilience Enhancement Initiative (ACREI) is to develop and implement adaptation strategies and measures that will strengthen the resilience of vulnerable smallholder farmers, agro-pastoralists and pastoralists in the Horn of Africa to climate variability and change. In particular, the interventions in the initiative will technically improve climate forecasts using a regional approach and build the capacity of communities to understand and appropriately use climate information and related agro-advisories in decision-making to climate-proof their livelihoods; and thus enhance their food and nutrition security. The project is being implemented in selected locations in three countries; Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.
This project is centred on improving farm household food security through identification and promotion of appropriate adaptation options and improved farm planning and decision making for increased food production in both good and bad seasons, improved storage of surplus food, and better trade and distribution options thereby increasing food availability in both good and bad years. Appropriate climate information flows, and climate information-based decision making, will contribute to better targeting of farming interventions aiming at improving food security and building effective safety nets against climatic shocks as well as support the identification of climate change adaptation options for adoption in other CSA systems.
The project is implemented by ICPAC, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO). ICPAC leads the implementation on Climate informed decision making.
Project Expected Outcomes
The project targets the two ministries in each member state that have the responsibilities of the relevant departments that deal with climate change adaptation, provision of climate services, sustainability of agricultural production and resilience building in agricultural systems. The improved climate and weather services to be provided by this project will become part of the routine services provided by the NMHSs in the target countries thus ensuring continuity post intervention.
The expected project outcomes include (i) Improved climate informed decision making in regional, national and sub-national institutions (ii) Sustainably enhanced productivity, production, livelihood diversification and income levels among targeted communities (iii) Enhanced technical capacity of development and extension actors (national, sub-national, private sector, NGOs, CBOs) to support community level climate adaptation strategies.
