Food Labelling Status and Nutrition Profile of Food Products in Tanzania: Focus on Fatty Acid Content in Edible Oils, Street and Fast Foods.

1. Project Description

The overall primary objective is to evaluate the status of food labelling and determine the nutrition profile of food products, with a special focus on fatty acid content of commonly consumed edible oils/fats, street and fast foods in Tanzania.

  • To evaluate the status of fatty acid content labelling in commonly consumed edible oils/fats based on local and international labelling standards
  • To evaluate the status of fatty acid content labelling in commonly consumed pre-packaged foods based on local and international labelling standards
  • To determine the levels of trans fatty acids in commonly consumed edible oils/fats, street and fast foods
  • To determine the levels of other fatty acids (saturated and unsaturated fatty acids) commonly consumed edible oils/fats, street and fast foods.

2. Project Expected Outcomes:

The intern should have enough mathematical statistical knowledge and be able to

  • Get involved in questionnaire development for the study
  • Get involved in part of data collection for the study
  • Develop a sound and detailed data analysis plan including statistical approaches and packages (software to be used)
  • Learn, practice and execute relevant statistical analysis of collected data
  • Produce relevant figures and tables based on a statistical analysis
  • Interpret data analysis and develop a manuscript.
