AIMS-Tübingen Data Science & AI Fellowship Program

Program Background

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen (Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning – New Perspectives for Science) partnered to launch a Prestigious Data Science & AI Fellowship Program. This 4-year (2022-2025) fellowship program aligns well with the objectives of the AIMS Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) programs, which integrate academic instruction with on-the-job practice and has been shown to increase graduate employability and professional career growth.

About Eberhard Karls University Tübingen

The University of Tübingen, with its more than 500 years of history, is one of Germany’s oldest universities. It belongs to the group of eleven universities judged excellent under the German government’s Excellence Strategy, a funding program initiated by the Federal Government and the States which aims at strengthening Germany as a top-level site for science and research. One core research area of the University of Tübingen is machine learning. The Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science” was established in 2019. Its mission is to enable machine learning algorithms to take a central role in all aspects of scientific discovery and to understand how such a transformation will impact on the scientific approach as a whole. The Cluster of Excellence is funded by the German Research Foundation.

Information about the Fellowship

The fellowship program comprises of the following two components:

Work-Integrated Learning Research Opportunity: Candidates will be nominated by AIMS evaluating academic performance, technical qualification and personal suitability. Selected through a competitive application process, promising AIMS alumni will be offered a fully funded 6-month research fellowship with a group affiliated with the Cluster of Excellence at the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, Germany. Candidates have to show Machine Learning skills through coursework or their choice of thesis topic. Each fellowship will be co-supervised by an AIMS faculty member.

Doctoral Studies Opportunity: Towards the end of the research project (month 5), the supervisors evaluate the fellowship. Highly successful applicants may apply to upgrade the position into a PhD position for three years, for which it is expected that the PhD candidate spends roughly the same amount of time in Tübingen and the AIMS center of the African supervisor. This will be possible in only a few cases and will interface with the AIMS Data Science PhD program.
