3. Project Description:
The objective of this research project is to evaluate the possibilities of generating power from CO2 abundantly found in Lake Kivu and Kabuno bay. Rwanda is one of countries with low source of power, if CO2 to power is proven to be possible, this will boost the social economic livelihood for both Rwanda and DRC. Based on available literatures this project will consist of assessment and calculations of the process heat and mass balance as well as the efficiencies for the 4 steps involved in CO2 to power. Those steps are: Siphoning process of lake Kivu/Kabuno bay waters. CO2 separation from other components, Changing CO2 into ultra-supercritical state and power generation.

4. Expected Outcomes:
The outcomes of this research study are the following:

  1. A feasibility study of CO2 to power from Lake Kivu and Kabuno, including the expected benefits in terms of safety and efficiency. The development of this concept would allow responsible institutions to call for investors in the exploitation of CO2 from lake Kivu
  2. Detailed documentation on the extended power conversions, calculations and procedures for siphoning, separation, and power generation
  3. Full project report for management decisions
