Established in 2003 in Cape Town, South Africa, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a PanAfrican network of centres of excellence offering postgraduate training, research, and public engagement for the advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Africa. Building on the success of its first Centre in South Africa, AIMS launched the Next Einstein Initiative (NEI) in 2008 to scale up and roll out the AIMS model across the continent. Five additional centres were established in Senegal (2011), Ghana (2012), Cameroon (2013), Tanzania (2014), and Rwanda (2016). Its global secretariat is situated in Kigali, Rwanda and it has global offices in United Kingdom, Germany and Canada. Intern, Africa Science Week!
The Africa Science Week (ASW) Intern will provide support to the NEF Africa Science Week, NEF Ambassadors programme, NEF Global Gathering 2020, Scientific African Magazine and any other support required in the communications unit of the NEF. Reporting to the Online Community Manager, you will support the communications team to recruit Audio & Visual (AV) companies in each country to cover the NEF Africa Science Week, draft and schedule social media posts as approved, follow up with Ambassadors on ASW website content & branding materials, follow up with Ambassadors for any communications needs, support content mining and blogging as required, manage AV projects as required, support content gathering for the NEF Global Gathering 2020 revamp and providing website support to other NEF ongoing activities including Scientific African Magazine. As the ideal candidate, you will support the NEF Ambassadors to complete the ASW agreements and letters, follow up with NEF Ambassadors to provide reports following the implementation of Africa Science Week in their countries and liaise with NEF Ambassadors on other required documents. This is a 4-Month Internship opportunity based at AIMS Secretariat in Kigali, Rwanda.
Do you have what we need?
University Diploma in Communications/Marketing/Journalism/Social Media Management or a related field.
At least one-year work experience in communications, policy development or project management.
Knowledge of online and social media trends and best practices.
Strong writing skills (strong writer).
Ability to work independently and take initiative as required.
Ability to effectively manage multiple and often conflicting priorities.
Self-sufficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publishing), Design applications and savvy with web-based applications (Dropbox, Google, Skype). Available to respond to situations that may arise outside of normal work hours.
Ability and willingness to travel within and outside Africa whenever required.
Fluency in French is an asset.
