Five AIMS Senegal students were selected to participate in the Association des Jeunes Femmes et Mathématiques (AJFM) organized the 2nd edition of its Women’s Mathematics Workshop in Abidjan at the Université Houphouët Boigny with the support of the Mathematics Department. The workshop was a pan-African platform allowing young mathematicians to meet with role models, women breaking ground in the fields of academia, engineering, medicine and molecular research.
The workshop set out to be a forum for the exchange of ideas, as well as discussions of career and study possibilities for young women in mathematics. With the participation of secondary school and university students, secondary school mathematics teachers and university lecturers, engineers, scientific researchers, as well as entrepreneurs and promoters of scientific research and innovation, the gathering turned out to be an enviable melting pot and viable resource centre for research in mathematics and the sciences in general.
Layih Butake, the AIMS Senegal MCF Communication & Outreach Manager, participated in a panel on “The
Participation of the African Female Mathematician in the Scientific,
Technical, Technological and Economic Development of Africa” and held a session on “Promoting Women in the Sciences: The AIMS Model” that provided information on the mission and vision of AIMS-NEI and the how to take part in AIMS programs.
