The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is delighted to share the exciting news that the Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science” at the University of Tübingen has secured a second round of funding through Germany’s national Excellence Strategy. This renewed support, provided by the German Research Foundation (DFG), will span seven years starting in 2026.
This is a significant milestone, not just for the Cluster, but for the wider global ecosystem of researchers, innovators, and institutions collaborating through this initiative. As one of the implementing partners in projects linked to this funding, AIMS looks forward to the continued momentum it brings, especially in strengthening Africa’s role in cutting-edge machine learning research for science.
The Cluster’s mission to integrate machine learning into scientific discovery aligns with AIMS’ commitment to nurturing the next generation of African scientists. We are particularly excited about the ripple effects this funding will generate from research opportunities and knowledge exchange to capacity building programs that bridge excellence in Africa and Europe.
We invite our community to stay tuned for new opportunities that will emerge as part of this renewed funding phase including a call for applications for a joint research chair in Machine Learning for Science to be co-hosted by the AIMS Research and Innovation Centre (AIMS RIC) in Rwanda. AIMS is proud to collaborate with University of Tübingen to foster exciting research and advances at the interface of machine learning and science.
