Statistical Analysis of women Contribution to the Aquaculture and Fisheries Sector

3. Project Description:
In developing countries, women play an important role in the socio-economic development, however their contributions to the aquaculture and fisheries sector around lake Kivu remain under reported. Constraints faced by females in this sector include high level of illiteracy, not enough technical knowledge and skills in fishing and fish farming activities, limiting access and control over resources, unavailability of data on women involvement.

This research will focus on various gender issues related to the participation of females in the fisheries and aquaculture sector and will aim at:

  1. determining the level of participation of women in this sector around lake Kivu,
  2. assessing the roles of women in the sector,
  3. analyzing obstacles and potential related to women contributions to the socio-economic development,
  4. identifying and recommend ways for the promotion of equal opportunities for both men and women.

4. Expected Outcomes:
The outcomes of this research study are the following:

  1. Detailed documentation (including collected filed data) on roles of women in lake Kivu aquaculture and fisheries sector and faced challenges
  2. One business plan for women to run one aquaculture (farming project) in or around lake Kivu,
  3. One business plan for women to run one capture fisheries project around lake Kivu,
  4. Field trips reports and Final research project.
