Developing Operational Climate services and training

3. Project Description:
This project seeks to accelerate innovation with tailored climate services development for agriculture, water, disaster risk management, infrastructure design, construction and operation, health with emphasis on meningitis and malaria epidemic surveillance and control in Africa.
Specific objectives include:
- Identify Meteorological information and services needs
- Review existing operational products and propose upgrades
- Develop or upgrade products and services
- Prepare training materials for Climate services providers or supply toward structuring climate services market for resilience
Interns will be required to on the following activities:
- Evaluation of satellites, in situ and model derived products for monitoring and very short range (up to 6 hours ahead) forecasting of heavy rainfall, drought watch, heat waves for disaster resilience
- Methods and tools development for detection of extreme events based on past and present data climate data to improve warnings
- Development of single and multimodal probabilistic forecasting products to support operational advisories, watches and warnings by African National meteorological and Hydrological Services
- Predictability of mesoscale and synoptic scale drivers of weather and climate extremes to improve understanding and representation of processes in modeling and forecasting systems
- Building a prototype of national climate data base application supporting climate service generation (e.g. using Climsoft and R INSTAT)
4. Expected Outcomes:
Long term goal: An Africa with people more resilient to extremes events and society with increased ability to reduce impacts of climate change
- GDP losses due to climate variability and change reduced
- Increased in food production due to climate resilient agriculture calendars
- National Meteorological Services strengthened on data rescue and management, climate service provision
- Innovative methods, tools and products available for resilience and sustainable development
- World class network of technical experts and scientists for innovative African climate services provision available
