Correlation between long term climate data and conflict data in an effort to understand the linkages

  1. Host Institution:
IGADs Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism (CEWAN), P.O.Box 58652, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  2. Supervisors :
Dr. Sunday Angoma OKELLO, Conflict Analyst
  3. Project Description:
A study of CEWARN data in 2007 offers preliminary evidence that environmental indicators may serve as useful indicators of organized raids and violence. Results show strong correlation between climate change/variability and conflicts in the IGAD region. They negatively impact ecosystems thereby exposing communities to diverse vulnerabilities including conflicts and food insecurity. Climate change demonstrably increases variability in rainfall. This variability together with the increasingly frequent and more severe droughts in arid and-semi arid lands provoke migrations and places additional stress on already stressed social and political systems. Changes in pastoral ecosystems have an immediate influence on the fluid relationships between pastoral groups.

But most of these vulnerabilities can be prevented and or mitigated by among others, using climate information to proactively plan ahead, investing in projects that would ensure easy adaptation and resilience of communities in case of climate changes, and promoting coexistence among the communities. Thus, to address the climate variability/conflict nexus and increase resilience of the communities, focus should be given on the likely impact of the climate change on social, environmental and economic sectors and appropriate early action undertaken to mitigate the impact e.g. improving availability and access of social amenities and services in the destination as well as coordinating movements and use of resources.
  4. Expected outcome:
The study will aim to correlate long term climate data and conflict data in an effort to understand the linkages. The understanding of the climate knowledge will be led by the IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Center (ICPAC), while understanding the conflict data will be led by IGADs Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism.
