Digital smallholder soil mapping using Sentinel-2, field data and machine leaning

Host institution: ICRISAT / agCelerant-Mali, Bamako

Supervisors: Pierre C. Sibiry Traore / Andree M. Nenkam / Anthony M. Whitbread

Project Description:

With Sentinel-2’s 10-m spatial resolution and 5-day repeat capability, Earth Observation (EO) crossed a critical threshold for crop conditions monitoring in smallholder fields as demonstrated in the NADiRA innovation action and the CASCAID 2.0 (CCAFS) project. Exploiting ground-based observations of agronomic management streamed by  the agCelerantTM digital smallholder value chain orchestration platform, this internship will assess Sentinel-2’s potential for inferring soil properties from measured crop response, and for operational soil mapping from farm to district scales.

Expected outcome :
Soil properties are appraised more economically from farm to district scales to improve technology targeting and intensification in smallholder agriculture.

Applications for this internship should be submitted via the online application system, stating clearly the title of the internship.
