Mathematics Teacher Training

AIMS is committed to building the pipeline of students progressing to secondary and tertiary mathematics and science education, and to decrease the failure and drop-out rate of mathematics students at all levels. Through innovative pedagogical approaches, the use of technology, and continually updated curricula, AIMS is focusing on strengthening the mathematics teacher capacity and reaching as many students in Africa as possible.

AIMS Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC)

Based in South Africa, AIMSSEC runs three types of professional development courses for primary and secondary teachers, subject advisers and field trainers from all over the country:

  • A 3-month Mathematical Thinking course (endorsed by the South African Council for Educators (SACE) for 15 professional development points);
  • A 2-year Advanced Certificate in Teaching;
  • A 2- year Advanced Diploma in Education.

AIMSSEC also organises public lectures, local teacher workshops, master classes and special events for learners, and promotes the formation of maths clubs in schools. For more information please visit their website.

Mathematics Teacher Training in Cameroon

The Mathematics Teacher Training program at AIMS Cameroon is a 5 year pilot program in partnership with The MasterCard Foundation, AIMS, ADEA and the government of Cameroon to improve the quality of secondary schools maths education by training maths teachers, inspectors, experienced teachers as master trainers who will in turn train secondary school math teachers. This is intended to strengthen the content and delivery of mathematics at the secondary level across Cameroon, which will contribute to build and strengthen the pipeline of students continuing into STEM fields at the tertiary level.

This pilot program will increase the transition rates between educational levels in science and mathematics – especially for girls, and contribute significantly to Africa gaining its rightful place in the global knowledge economy and securing its economic future.
