Rapid estimation of sorghum genetic coefficients for smallholder yield prediction

Rapid estimation of sorghum genetic coefficients for smallholder yield prediction

Host institution: ICRISAT / agCelerant-Nigeria, Kano

Supervisors : Folorunso M. Akinseye / Pierre C. Sibiry Traore / Jana Kholova

Project Description:

In the frameworks of the NADiRA innovation action and the CASCAID 2.0 (CCAFS) project, the agCelerantTM digital smallholder value chain orchestration platform produces real-time yield forecasts for smallholder plots. Proper yield model calibration involves the use of genotypic parameters but is constrained by the lack of expensive field experiments in controlled environments. To help exploit sorghum’s potential for climate-smart industrial value chains, this internship will develop a rapid method for genotype parameter estimation using larger, cheaper on-station and on-farm varietal evaluation datasets.

Expected outcome:

Smallholder crop yield forecasts are improved thanks to robust, affordable model parameterizations in data-sparse environments.
