Reducing rainfed smallholder field delineation costs with satellite imagery

Reducing rainfed smallholder field delineation costs with satellite imagery

Host institution: ICRISAT / agCelerant-Mali, Bamako

Supervisors: Pierre C. Sibiry Traore / Cedric Champenois / Daniel Annerose

Project Description:
Accurate predictions of production levels in heterogeneous smallholder agriculture require precise estimates of planted and harvested areas and of other agronomic management information. Delineating smallholder plots from ground circumnavigation is expensive and often biased. This internship will evaluate different options to reduce these costs using high-resolution public domain (e.g. Sentinel-2) and very high-resolution commercial imagery (e.g. WorldView-3) for insertion inside the agCelerantTM workflows, contributing to the NADiRA innovation action and the CASCAID 2.0 (CCAFS) project.

Expected outcome:

Smallholder plot boundaries are delineated more economically, lowering the cost of serving skillful estimates of aggregate production to agricultural off-takers.

Applications for this internship should be submitted via the online application system, stating clearly the title of the internship.
