Automatic estimation of rural household size and assets from very high-resolution imagery

Automatic estimation of rural household size and assets from very high-resolution imagery

Host institution: ICRISAT / agCelerant-Mali, Bamako

Supervisors: Pierre C. Sibiry Traore / Cedric Champenois / Daniel Annerose

Project Description:

Data is scarce about rural smallholder producers in Africa, stunting potential investment by financial institutions who mitigate high uncertainty and risk with high securities. Characterizing rural household size and assets requires field work that is too expensive in business operations. This internship will use historical data from the STARS project to develop alternative workflows from commercial very-high resolution imagery to feed the agCelerantTM risk scoring algorithms, contributing to the NADiRA innovation action and the CASCAID 2.0 (CCAFS) project.

Expected outcome :

Quantitative estimates of household size and assets reduces the cost of smallholder credit risk scoring and protection against climate risks.
