#AlumOfTheWeek – Dr. Oluwakemi Imole Adewumi, AIMS South Africa 2016 alumna.

On Saturday, 21st May 2022, the AIMS Alumni office held the maiden edition of the Alumni Meet-Up in Lagos, Nigeria. This event was necessary because Nigerians form over 10% of the total alumni who have graduated from across the AIMS Centres. Noteworthy is that most of these Nigerians who come to AIMS, like other students, move on to pursue further studies, which enable them to make an impact regardless of their locations worldwide. One of such is the highlight of this edition of the #AlumoftheWeek. Currently working as an analyst and a consultant, the AIMS South Africa 2016 alumna, Dr. Oluwakemi Imole Adewumi, is our #AlumoftheWeek.

After her training at AIMS South Africa, Kemi got the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship to read another master’s program in Quantitative Finance and Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University. She excelled, leading her class as the only student to graduate with a distinction. This achievement won her the Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Kent, which she had just completed. She currently works as a Statistical Analyst at the Government Statistical Services, UK.

Kemi founded a non-profit, CHRISTAD Foundation (www.christadfoundation.org), which strategically helps create awareness of the numerous career paths a degree in Mathematics can bring to an individual as her contribution to her community. The foundation also designs activity-based programs that relate taught-classroom concepts to day-to-day activities.

She attributes the foundation’s establishment to the challenges she faced during her undergraduate studies. This challenge was solely on the perceived limitation on the extent to which a mathematics degree could go. Even though it was a known fact that she would become a lecturer – a noble profession she adores so much, it was daunting for her to think that is all her mathematics degree could offer her. Having attended AIMS, she said, exposed her to the numerous pathways that could be explored, and the rest they say is history.

Dr. Adewumi describes her time at AIMS as the best in her academic journey and serves as the pivot of her current career. Being at AIMS spurred her interest in applying mathematics to finance and economics. This was done by providing needed skills and expertise to thrive and be effective. These include exposure to programming languages and the use of LaTex.

“I like to say that my MSc dissertation and Ph.D. thesis were compiled using the AIMS thesis template.”

According to her, the network built at AIMS can never be overemphasized.

“It is noteworthy that AIMS gave me a purposeful and supporting network. I met my mentor Dr. Oyakhilome Wallace Ibahgui, who has since been so helpful in guiding and supporting my academic and career progress.”

Before joining AIMS, Kemi had graduated as the best student with a First Class (Honours) degree in Mathematics from the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria. During her undergraduate studies, she participated in the National Mathematics Olympiad for Universities, emerged as the best student in the female category, and won a silver medal in the combined category from among the 70 high-achieving contestants. It placed her in the top 2% of Nigerian mathematics graduates. Also, in the course of her undergraduate studies, she received several awards and scholarships from the Ekiti State Government and other independent organisations.

By way of advice to younger generations of Africa, Kemi says, “There is space for everyone to make exploit, keep hope alive.”
